Salazie, Hell-Bourg, Belouve: a day with a driver

Salazie, Hell-Bourg, Belouve: a day with a driver
Salazie is the greenest and rainiest of the three cirques (Salazie, Cilaos, Mafate). It''s also where the Creole-heritage vibe is strongest, thanks to Hell-Bourg, listed among the « Plus Beaux Villages de France ». And it''s the gateway to Belouve (1,506 m) and its primary tamarin forest, one of the most moving viewpoints on the island. Here''s the classic full-day driver itinerary to bring it all together.

Variant: from Saint-Denis, ~1 h via RN2 then RN6.

Hell-Bourg, heritage village
At 940 m, Hell-Bourg is the cirque''s former thermal village, prosperous in the 19th century before the springs were abandoned. Today it''s an open-air museum:
- Maison Folio: 19th-century Creole house, Creole garden, guided tour
- Cemetery: traditional graves, sweeping view over the cirque
- Notre-Dame de l''Assomption church: Creole architecture
- Main street: traditional Creole houses, small eateries, crafts
Local food: chicken curry, sausage rougail, chayote gratin (chayote, locally chouchou, is Salazie''s emblem vegetable). Several spots on the main street; book ahead on weekends.
Belouve and the tamarin forest
From Hell-Bourg, ~30 min of forest road up to the Belouve lodge (1,506 m). One of the most moving spots on Réunion: a belvedere plunging 800 m above the Salazie cirque, with Piton des Neiges facing you.
The Belouve forest is primary highland-tamarin forest, an endemic species with twisted moss-covered branches, enchanted-forest atmosphere. Several easy trails leave from the lodge: Trou de Fer belvedere (3-4 h round trip, good weather only), Tamarin loop (1 h).
Forest road is narrow, sedan-passable but slow. In high season, lodge parking fills up.
Waterfalls and photo stops
On the Salazie → Hell-Bourg road, several must-stops:
- Voile de la Mariée: large multi-jet waterfall, visible from the road, lay-by parking
- Cascade Blanche: highest one, ~640 m, in the backdrop
- Source Manouilh: former thermal spring at Hell-Bourg
- Mare à Poule d''Eau viewpoint: panorama over the cirque
