Getting to Piton de la Fournaise: road, parking, driver
The Piton de la Fournaise (2,632 m) is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, erupting roughly every 9 months. Getting there means crossing four climate zones in 90 minutes of driving: sugar-cane coast, Plaine des Cafres, tamarin forest, volcanic desert. Here is the full guide for VTC or self-drive access, with parking, weather, and the hourly driver option.

Plaine des Sables, the key stage
At 2,200 m, the Plaine des Sables is a 7 km-long desert of red and black scoria. Surreal view, photogenic at any hour but magical at sunrise. The track crossing it is sedan-passable but jolting: keep it to 30 km/h max. Several official photo stops with parking: Plaine des Sables north, mid-section, and south viewpoint before the final climb to Pas de Bellecombe.

Weather & timing
Local rule: leave early, head back down by 1 pm. Trade-wind clouds roll up from the south-east mid-morning and often hide the crater after noon. Pas de Bellecombe temperatures: 5-15 °C depending on season, frequent wind. Bring a fleece + windbreaker even in austral summer.
Dry season (May-November): excellent visibility but chilly mornings. Wet season (December-April): cyclone risk, possible road closures, but spectacular scenery between showers.
Check the OVPF (volcano observatory) before leaving, the summit zone can be closed by the prefecture during alerts.
Why hire a VTC by the hour
The volcano trip typically takes 5 to 7 hours in total (drive + visit + photo stops). The hourly hire format (from €41/h) covers:
- Round-trip from hotel or Roland-Garros airport
- Driver wait at Pas de Bellecombe during your crater hike or photos
- Any stop you want: Cité du Volcan, Nez de Bœuf, Plaine des Sables
Compared with a rental car (~€70/day + fuel + the stress of driving the forest road back home tired), the driver option pays off with 2-4 passengers.

Combine volcano + another site
- Volcano + Cité du Volcan: science museum at Bourg-Murat, 2 h. Great to close the day while clouds cover the highlands.
- Volcano + Grand Bassin: only Creole village accessible only on foot, 1 h descent + 1h30 climb. Half-day extra.
- Volcano + Saint-Joseph: south descent via RN3 then RN2, optional Cap Méchant and 2007 lava flow.
To plan a single day, read Round-the-island in one day: itinerary & VTC price, the volcano won''t fit, it deserves its own day.
