Plaine des Cafres and the volcano road
RN3 climbs from Le Tampon (500 m) to Bourg-Murat (1,600 m) in 30-40 min. From there, the volcano forest road (24 km) leads to Pas de Bellecombe: the classic departure point to view Piton de la Fournaise.
Bourg-Murat is a highland village: restaurants, cheese-makers, local-produce market. It's also the base for hikes toward Pic des Sables, the Plaine des Sables and the Volcano.
