Paying for a VTC ride: cash, card, in-app

Paying for a VTC ride: cash, card, in-app
In Reunion Island, paying for a VTC ride is easier than it looks. Most operators centre on in-app payment: you confirm the ride, your card is pre-authorised, and the charge happens automatically at the end. But cash is still supported on some platforms. And the business invoice is usually automatic.
This guide walks through every payment method, the upsides, the limits, and best practices.

Available payment methods
On modern VTC platforms in Reunion Island (including Zoot), you typically get to choose between:
- Bank card (Visa, Mastercard, sometimes Amex)
- Apple Pay (iPhone, Apple Watch)
- Google Pay (Android)
- Cash (flagged at booking time)
Payment is always secured by European banking standards (3D Secure on first card use).
| Method | Available on Zoot | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Bank card | Yes | Automatic, emailed invoice |
| Apple Pay | Yes | Biometric authentication |
| Google Pay | Yes | Biometric authentication |
| Cash | Yes, if flagged | No card required |
| Wire / business invoice | On request | Corporate accounts |
How card payment works
The flow is designed to be transparent and secure:
- You confirm the ride in the app.
- Your card is pre-authorised for the quoted amount (no immediate charge).
- The driver arrives and completes the ride.
- At the end, the payment is automatically charged on the saved card.
- The invoice is emailed within minutes.
You do nothing when getting out: no card to pull out, no PIN, no notes to count. That makes the experience particularly smooth when you re in a rush, juggling luggage, or with kids.

Cash payment
Not every operator accepts cash, but Zoot does in Reunion Island as long as you flag it at booking. Why offer this option?
- For customers without a bank card or unwilling to save one.
- For foreign tourists without a compatible card.
- For short rides without an invoice needed.
How it works in practice:
- At booking, pick "Cash payment".
- The quoted price is the amount to hand over.
- The driver collects directly and confirms in their app.
Note: for hourly hire (multiple hours), cash is still possible but often less practical for large amounts. Card is safer.
Apple Pay and Google Pay
Native wallets (Apple Pay on iOS, Google Pay on Android) bring extra comfort:
- Biometric authentication (Face ID, fingerprint).
- No card number to type.
- Stronger security (card number is never shared with the merchant).
On Zoot, adding Apple Pay or Google Pay is a two-tap setup. At ride time, the charge happens with zero interaction on your side.
In-app tipping
At the end of the ride, the app generally offers to add a tip for the driver:
- 5%, 10%, 15% of the fare
- Or a custom amount
- Or no tip (fully optional)
Tipping is not mandatory in France, but appreciated. To understand the local custom, read our dedicated article on tipping VTC drivers in Reunion Island.
Automatic invoice for business
For business trips:
- The invoice is automatically emailed after each ride.
- You can bundle all rides from a month into a summary.
- The PDF format works with expense reports.
- On Zoot, you can create a business profile with a distinct email (expense reports) and a separate payment method (company card).
This eases bookkeeping, especially for freelancers or sales reps multiplying meetings.

FAQ
My card payment failed: what now?
Check that your card is valid, that the weekly limit isn t maxed, and that 3D Secure is correctly set up with your bank. On failure, the app typically offers a backup card or cash payment to the driver.
Can I change payment method mid-ride?
Yes, until the ride ends. In the Zoot app, go to "Payment method" and pick another one. The charge will go to the new source.
Can a driver ask me for a tip?
No. Tipping is strictly optional and customer-driven. A driver pressing for a tip is outside the service. See our article on VTC tipping.
Is my card data safe?
Yes. VTC platforms use PCI-DSS certified payment providers (Stripe, Adyen, etc.) that store and encrypt card data. The app never sees your full card number. See also our VTC safety article.
How do I retrieve an invoice I already received?
All your invoices live in the "My rides" tab of the Zoot app. You can re-download them as PDF at any time, with no expiry.
